Agastya - 6

You should stop growing and remain with your bent till I return. If you continue growing I will not be able to go back to the north. Therefore remain as you are today with your head bent. You can continue growing after my return. Vindhya had to respect his preceptor's words. He stopped growing. He stood with his head bent as instructed by his preceptor. Sage Agastya and Lopmudra climped up the mountain and got to the other side and continued their journey southwards.Unfortunately for Vindya, Agastya never returned. As a result of it, Vindhya who stood with his head bent, could not grow at all. Thisway sage Agastya stopped Vindhya from growing higher and this easened the movement of the sun and the moon. This great service by the sage made life easy for humans and other living beings and he became blessed. It is impossible for ordinary mortals to estimate the greatness of the service rendred by Mahatmas.

Agastya's curse to Nahusha
Devendra the cheif of gods was the son of Thwarshtr. He killed Vritrasuna by deceitful means. By doing so he earned the sin of killing of a brahmin. He was scared and left heaven and his wife Shachi Devi and without telling anyone he went to lake Mansa and began to live inside the stem of a lotus flower. The Devas were worried at Indra losing his position and hence absconding. Both heaven and earth witnessed hundereds unnatural happenings portending calamity. Everyone including sages, siddhas, gandharvas and devas were terrible scared. Heaven became leaderless and there was chaos. As a result of lack of rains, there were famines and droughts all over. All the Maharishis, sages and devas met in an assembly and decided to appoint, a great king called Nahusha as Devendra. By nature Nahusha was righteous and truthful. But being a Kshatriya, the quality of Kshtra was very strong in him and began to spend his time in sensual pleasures with apasaras. His desire for carnal pleasures became uncontrollable and he desired to have Shachi devi for himself. He called all the devas and rishis and commanded them to get Shachi devi to him either by fair means or by force and if they failed he threatened them saying that they had to face dire consequences. They resolved to save Shachi devi some how. They made a plan. Shachi Devi should go to Nahusha and tell him to find out whether her husband Indra was alive or not, for when the husband was alive, marrying another was against dharma. Therefore she should be given time until she got news about her husband Indra. If he was no more, then she would marry him. Shachi Devi accordingly met Nahusha and told him what she was asked to tell. Nahusha agreed. Then all the devas went to Vaikunta and met Lord Vishnu. They asked him by what way could Indra get himself redeemed of the sin of killing a brahmin. Lord Vishnu suggested to the devas that Devendra should perform Ashwamedhayaga. Indra and Shachi should worship Jagadambika, the mother of the earth. These would bring them good luck. Accordingly the devas went to the place where Devendra was hiding. They helped him perform Ashwamedha yaga and Shachi Devi and Devendra workshipped Jagadambika. As directed by Brihaspati, Shachi Devi individually workshipped Bhuvaneswari Devi. Bhuvaneswari was pleased and she appeared before Shachi and blessed her. She directed Shachi devi to go to Lake Mansa and get the ideol of devi by name Vishvakarma. Goddess said,"You can also see Devendra there. In course of time, Nahusha will lose his memory as directed by me and he is going to lose power wait until then."On the advice of the goddess, Shachi Devi went to Devendra and informed him what the Goddess had told her. After listening to Shachi Devendra said,"Devi you are a great and devoted wife. Even then you have to suffer pain for some more time. If the wicked Nahusha comes to you and encourages you to marry him, fix a day and tell him, If you act accordingly to my word,I will marry you. He would certainly agree to it. Then tell him, "King Nahusha if you come to me in a palanquin borne by great rishis, I will be yours. This is my Vrita." Nahusha will certainly do it. He will be destroyed by the anger of the sages. You are blessed by the Goddess. May you prosper. Good bye."Accordingly Shachi went to Nahusha and told him,"King Nahusha, if you come to me in a palanquin borne by holy sages, I will be yours"Nahusha was delighted and he agreed. He sent for sages and told them that they had to carry him in apalanquin to Shachi Devi's house."When the Saptarishis heard Nahusha's order they liked it the least, but they controlled their displeasure thinking that everything in the world took place at the will of God, and Nahusha got his position by his good luck therefore one had to wait for things to happen for our good. Therefore the sages agreed to carry him to Shachi Devi's house.Nahusha was happy. He sat in the palanquin thinking of Shachi Devi's company and ordered the sages to start. Nahusha felt happy to sit in the divine palanquin decorated tastefully with jewellery and silken cloth of different colors. As the journey continued the king became impatient because the pace was slow. Sage Agastya, who was shorter than the others, walked a bit slowly. In this uncontrollable desire to reach Shachi at the earliest, he bagan to press the sages to walk faster. When they could not he began to scold them, shout at them and by doing so he put them to shame.
